When 2024 McNulty Prize Winner and Civil Society Fellow Gloria Walton took center stage at this year’s Resnick Aspen Action Forum, she delivered a speech that embodied the very essence of vulnerability in leadership. Battling altitude sickness and struggling to breathe, Walton stood before the audience, sharing not just her words but also a powerful leadership lesson: embrace vulnerability and never hesitate to ask for help. She emphasized that it is “the call of leadership” to be courageous enough to reveal one’s imperfections and seek support when necessary.

The concept of vulnerability in leadership can seem counterintuitive especially as per the traditional notions of what a perfect leader should look like. From time immemorial, we have celebrated and even worshipped strong, fearless, and unshakeable leaders who inspire confidence in the people they lead and set an example to follow. As a result, many leaders feel the need to maintain a facade of perfection and infallibility. However, this pursuit is not only unattainable but isolating, often hindering growth and innovation. According to a Harvard Business Review study, “executives, fearing criticism and exposure, work to perpetuate the illusion of infallibility — and perfectionism becomes a self-perpetuating prison. ”

Ironically, the key to unlocking true leadership credibility lies in vulnerability.

In her New York Times bestseller Dare to Lead, Brené Brown redefines leadership through a concept she calls “rumbling with vulnerability.” Brown dispels the myth that vulnerability is a weakness by positioning it as a strength instead. She argues that showing up as your authentic self, especially during times of risk, uncertainty, and emotional exposure, cultivates trust and innovation. Leaders who embrace vulnerability create an environment where their teams feel safe sharing ideas, taking risks, and collaborating, ultimately driving organizational success.

As the definition of business success evolves from focusing solely on monetary metrics to considering the broader impact on teams, customers, and society, the leadership approach guiding companies to success is also changing. In a Forbes article, Sanjib Sahoo, EVP of Ingram Micro, highlights a significant shift in the business leadership landscape, with more leaders embracing authenticity, vulnerability, and values over perfectionism. This approach helps forge deeper connections with employees and customers, creating a stronger, more inclusive culture.

With the curiosity to explore real-world examples of leading with vulnerability, I spoke with several transformative Fellows from the Aspen Global Leadership Network at this year’s Action Forum. Here’s how they said practicing vulnerability helps them become more effective leaders:

Creates Greater Self-awareness

“We’re not perfect, and we need to be okay with that,” says Marilu Salvador, a Central America Leadership Initiative Fellow. “The best kind of leader is the one who can admit, ‘I’m not okay right now,’ and allow others to help and support them.”

Reflecting on her 30 years of experience in human and social development, including her role as National Director for Basic Education for Panama's Ministry of Education, Salvador emphasized the importance of recognizing one’s limitations and acknowledging that you need other people with different qualities and perspectives to guide you and hold you accountable for your mistakes.

Invites Collaboration and Cooperation

Kaci Patterson, Civil Society Fellow and Founder of Social Good Solutions, recognized early in life that there isn’t much daylight between leadership and vulnerability, a lesson she learned while playing as the point guard in numerous basketball games growing up.

“Vulnerability in leadership is really being able to bring other people in to be part of a larger vision and a larger goal and to say that together we can do this,” she said. “I need you as much as you need me. And we’re going to build something better together than I could have ever built on my own.”

Catalyzes Growth and Innovation

You may be familiar with the “fail fast” mentality, a popular business management concept that promotes experimenting, identifying mistakes early, and making quick corrections to test the viability of a product or idea. Similarly, by being open to making and acknowledging mistakes you create more opportunities for feedback, learning, and innovation.

Marlon Peterson, Civil Society Fellow and executive director of the College & Community Fellowship, emphasizes that fallibility is an essential part of one’s personal and professional growth journey. “Fallibility is not something to be ashamed of or afraid of,” he said. “It’s a marker—a litmus test—that shows where you need to improve.”

This idea also resonates with Kevin Hainline – associate research professor at the University of Arizona and member of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRCam science team – who led a serene stargazing session in the fields of Anderson Park at this year's Action Forum. Hainline reflected on how vulnerability opens the door to new insights: “Sometimes we are drawn to the big, bright, showy things in life, but when we take time to look at places where fewer people do—places we might shy away from, places we might be afraid—that’s where we really do the learning and growing as people.”

Humanizes Leaders

As hard as it is to believe, by being transparent about their own challenges, insecurities, and mistakes, leaders humanize themselves, allowing their teams to relate to them on a deeper level and fostering a more cohesive and supportive work culture. In fact, Miroslava Herrera, a Central America Leadership Initiative Fellow, believes that it is the only way to genuinely connect with anyone. “When a leader is someone that looks like a tower [intimidating or unreachable], people can’t connect with you,” she said.

Marlon Peterson further highlights the importance of relatability in leadership, noting, “When people are able to see you in themselves, it creates some of the most profound forms of leadership. If they see you as unattainable, they might feel that your success is out of reach.”

AI technology is causing a surge in US power demand, especially from data centers.

This is pushing up wholesale electricity prices, boosting profits for power producers.

Consumers are likely to face higher electricity bills as utilities invest in grid upgrades to meet the rising demand.

The U.S. power market is poised for a major shake-up as consumption is soaring amid the AI technology boom.

The surge in power demand, led by data centers, has started to create winners in the American electricity sector. Expectations of booming consumption in the coming years are raising wholesale and retail power prices, pushing up profits for power-generating firms and utilities, and raising household bills for consumers.

The AI-led jump in power demand could also kick-start legislative changes in some states that could allow utilities to own and invest in power-generation capacity.

**Power Producers’ Profits Jump**

Many independent power producers are boosting their earnings guidance, expecting much higher wholesale capacity auction prices for the coming years to continue supporting their revenues.

Amid tighter supplies, this year’s capacity auction prices at one of the biggest regional U.S. markets have soared compared to last year.

PJM Interconnection, which coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity and ensures power supplies for 65 million people in all or parts of 13 eastern and Midwest U.S. states and D.C., said at the end of July that it had secured sufficient resources to meet the reliability requirement for the 2025/2026 Delivery Year.

The auction produced a price of $269.92 per megawatt (MW)-day for much of the PJM footprint, compared to $28.92/MW-day for the 2024/2025 auction. That’s more than a nine-fold jump in just one year.

The key drivers of the higher prices included decreased supply offers into the auction due mainly to generator retirements, an increase in projected peak load, and FERC-approved market reforms, including improved reliability risk modeling for extreme weather.

The high prices in areas in Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina are “due to insufficient resources inside those regions and constraints on the transmission system that limit the ability to import capacity,” according to PJM.

“These prices indicate that those regions would benefit from either additional resources, additional transmission to allow increased imports into those regions, or a combination of the two,” said PJM.

As a result of the high prices that power generators cleared at the capacity auctions, many electricity producers raised their earnings guidance when announcing Q2 results this month.

Talen Energy, for example, raised its 2024 guidance ranges, with a new Adjusted EBITDA range of $720 million to $780 million and a new Adjusted Free Cash Flow range of $245 million to $285 million.

Vistra Corp said it’s confident that it would achieve Ongoing Operations Adjusted EBITDA results toward the upper end of the guidance range for 2024.

“Additionally, given our strong hedge profile and the recent PJM capacity auction results, we are increasing the range of our midpoint opportunity for 2025 Ongoing Operations Adjusted EBITDA by $200 million to $5,200 million to $5,700 million,” said Jim Burke, president and chief executive officer of Vistra.

The corporation has started construction of two new solar facilities, a 200-MW site backed by Amazon in Texas and a 405-MW site backed by Microsoft in Illinois.

Constellation Energy raised its adjusted operating earnings per share for 2024, too, as its commercial business is outperforming the guidance in a volatile market.

The jump in PJM’s capacity auction prices will translate into a $0.25 additional boost to earnings per share (EPS) for 2025 and $1.25 in additional EPS for 2026, Constellation Energy said.

Capacity auction prices will likely remain high in the next few years as power producers race to add more power plants to the grid amid surging demand.

“What we’re seeing in the [latest] capacity auction is the tip of the iceberg,” Hugh Wynne, co-head of utilities and renewable energy research at SSR, told The Wall Street Journal, commenting on the capacity and supply needs of the U.S. power market.

**Higher Prices For Consumers**

The need for more power resources and increased investments in transmission lines and grid expansions and upgrades will start to raise the cost of household electricity prices as utilities, when allowed by regulators, will seek to pass on some of the higher costs and capex onto consumers.

U.S. consumers are set to pay higher electricity bills as power providers raise investments in much-needed grid improvements amid an old power system that is not designed to cope with soaring demand and more frequent extreme weather events.

Over the past year, electricity price inflation has outpaced total consumer inflation in the United States. Expected further hikes in power rates for consumers could spark political backlash in some states and service areas.

“Transmission and distribution costs have been one of the major drivers for increases in retail electricity prices in recent years,” U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) says.

Due to tighter power supply, electric utility stocks are on the rebound this year as the surge in artificial intelligence technology has created a most unlikely winner on the stock market.

The U.S. power sector landscape could also be on the tip of regulatory changes as some regionally regulated utilities are pushing for changes to be allowed to invest in new generation capacity.

Such is the case with Pennsylvania-based PPL Corporation, whose Vice President for Investor Relations, Andy Ludwig, said on the Q2 earnings call that the company would be “advocating for legislative changes in Pennsylvania that would drive needed generation development, including authority that would support regulated utility investments in new generation.”

It’s one of the “biggest data breaches ever” and you might be exposed as a result.

Background check company Jerico Pictures Inc., which does business under the name National Public Data was breached back hackers earlier this year, a new lawsuit alleges.

The suit says that as a result, 2.9 billion people have had confidential data exposed and stolen, according to a new report from Mashable.

The worst part is that those impacted by this cyberattack may be unaware of their involvement since National Public Data allegedly collects data from non-public sources without consent.

The breach has exposed information on nearly 3 billion people, including full names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and personal details of both living and deceased relatives.

The Mashable report says that this previously unknown breach’s timing remains unclear.

Plaintiff Christopher Hofmann learned of it in July when an identity theft protection service alerted him that his data had been leaked on the dark web. The hackers posted the “National Public Data” database on a dark web forum in April, seeking $3.5 million from a buyer.

Last month, Mashable also reported on RockYou2024, a massive leak of nearly 10 billion users’ credentials, though it was an updated compilation of older breaches.

With billions of records exposed, the National Public Data breach could be one of the largest ever, comparable to Yahoo’s 2013 breach affecting 3 billion accounts.

SaveSave this storySaveSecurity flaws in your computer's firmware, the deep-seated code that loads first when you turn the machine on and controls even how its operating system boots up, have long been a target for hackers looking for a stealthy foothold. But only rarely does that kind of vulnerability appear not in the firmware of any particular computer maker, but in the chips found across hundreds of millions of PCs and servers. Now security researchers have found one such flaw that has persisted in AMD processors for decades, and that would allow malware to burrow deep enough into a computer's memory that, in many cases, it may be easier to discard a machine than to disinfect it.

At the Defcon hacker conference tomorrow, Enrique Nissim and Krzysztof Okupski, researchers from the security firm IOActive, plan to present a vulnerability in AMD chips they're calling Sinkclose. The flaw would allow hackers to run their own code in one of the most privileged modes of an AMD processor, known as System Management Mode, designed to be reserved only for a specific, protected portion of its firmware. IOActive's researchers warn that it affects virtually all AMD chips dating back to 2006, or possibly even earlier.

Nissim and Okupski note that exploiting the bug would require hackers to already have obtained relatively deep access to an AMD-based PC or server, but that the Sinkclose flaw would then allow them to plant their malicious code far deeper still. In fact, for any machine with one of the vulnerable AMD chips, the IOActive researchers warn that an attacker could infect the computer with malware known as a “bootkit” that evades antivirus tools and is potentially invisible to the operating system, while offering a hacker full access to tamper with the machine and surveil its activity. For systems with certain faulty configurations in how a computer maker implemented AMD's security feature known as Platform Secure Boot—which the researchers warn encompasses the large majority of the systems they tested—a malware infection installed via Sinkclose could be harder yet to detect or remediate, they say, surviving even a reinstallation of the operating system.

“Imagine nation-state hackers or whoever wants to persist on your system. Even if you wipe your drive clean, it's still going to be there,” says Okupski. “It's going to be nearly undetectable and nearly unpatchable.” Only opening a computer's case, physically connecting directly to a certain portion of its memory chips with a hardware-based programming tool known as SPI Flash programmer and meticulously scouring the memory would allow the malware to be removed, Okupski says.

Nissim sums up that worst-case scenario in more practical terms: “You basically have to throw your computer away.”

In a statement shared with WIRED, AMD acknowledged IOActive's findings, thanked the researchers for their work, and noted that it has “released mitigation options for its AMD EPYC datacenter products and AMD Ryzen PC products, with mitigations for AMD embedded products coming soon.” (The term “embedded,” in this case, refers to AMD chips found in systems such as industrial devices and cars.) For its EPYC processors designed for use in data-center servers, specifically, the company noted that it released patches earlier this year. AMD declined to answer questions in advance about how it intends to fix the Sinkclose vulnerability, or for exactly which devices and when, but it pointed to a full list of affected products that can be found on its website's security bulletin page.

Nissim and Okupski respond that while exploiting Sinkclose requires kernel-level access to a machine, such vulnerabilities are exposed in Windows and Linux practically every month. They argue that sophisticated state-sponsored hackers of the kind who might take advantage of Sinkclose likely already possess techniques for exploiting those vulnerabilities, known or unknown. “People have kernel exploits right now for all these systems,” says Nissim. “They exist and they're available for attackers. This is the next step.”

(The Sinkclose name, in fact, comes from combining that TClose term with Sinkhole, the name of an earlier System Management Mode exploit found in Intel chips in 2015.) In AMD-based machines, a safeguard known as TSeg prevents the computer's operating systems from writing to a protected part of memory meant to be reserved for System Management Mode known as System Management Random Access Memory or SMRAM. AMD's TClose feature, however, is designed to allow computers to remain compatible with older devices that use the same memory addresses as SMRAM, remapping other memory to those SMRAM addresses when it's enabled. Nissim and Okupski found that, with only the operating system's level of privileges, they could use that TClose remapping feature to trick the SMM code into fetching data they've tampered with, in a way that allows them to redirect the processor and cause it to execute their own code at the same highly privileged SMM level.

“I think it's the most complex bug I've ever exploited,” says Okupski.

Nissim and Okupski, both of whom specialize in the security of low-level code like processor firmware, say they first decided to investigate AMD's architecture two years ago, simply because they felt it hadn't gotten enough scrutiny compared to Intel, even as its market share rose. They found the critical TClose edge case that enabled Sinkclose, they say, just by reading and rereading AMD's documentation. “I think I read the page where the vulnerability was about a thousand times,” says Nissim. “And then on one thousand and one, I noticed it.” They alerted AMD to the flaw in October of last year, they say, but have waited nearly 10 months to give AMD more time to prepare a fix.

For users seeking to protect themselves, Nissim and Okupski say that for Windows machines—likely the vast majority of affected systems—they expect patches for Sinkclose to be integrated into updates shared by computer makers with Microsoft, who will roll them into future operating system updates. Patches for servers, embedded systems, and Linux machines may be more piecemeal and manual; for Linux machines, it will depend in part on the distribution of Linux a computer has installed.

Nissim and Okupski say they agreed with AMD not to publish any proof-of-concept code for their Sinkclose exploit for several months to come, in order to provide more time for the problem to be fixed. But they argue that, despite any attempt by AMD or others to downplay Sinkclose as too difficult to exploit, it shouldn't prevent users from patching as soon as possible. Sophisticated hackers may already have discovered their technique—or may figure out how to after Nissim and Okupski present their findings at Defcon.

Even if Sinkclose requires relatively deep access, the IOActive researchers warn, the far deeper level of control it offers means that potential targets shouldn't wait to implement any fix available. “If the foundation is broken,” says Nissim, "then the security for the whole system is broken."

"On August 9, China appealed to the World Trade Organization's dispute settlement mechanism over the EU's temporary anti-subsidy measures on EVs," a spokesperson for the country's commerce ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said the appeal aimed to "safeguard the development rights and interests of the electric vehicle industry and cooperation over the global green transformation".

"The EU's preliminary ruling lacks a factual and legal basis, seriously violates WTO rules, and undermines the overall situation of global cooperation in addressing climate change," it said.

"We urge the EU to immediately correct its wrong practices and jointly maintain the stability of China-EU economic and trade cooperation as well as EV industrial and supply chains."

Brussels said it took note of Beijing's move but was "confident" its probe and provisional measures were WTO-compatible.

"The EU is carefully studying all the details of this request and will react to the Chinese authorities in due course according to the WTO procedures," a European Commission spokesperson told AFP.

In Geneva, WTO spokesman Ismaila Dieng said the organization had received the Chinese request.

"Further information will be made available once the request has been circulated to WTO members," Dieng added in a statement.

Definitive duties are due to take effect by November for a five-year period, pending a vote by the EU's 27 states.

**Trade Rifts**

China and the EU have butted heads in recent years on a range of issues relating to trade, technology, human rights and national security.

But Brussels faces a delicate balancing act as it tries to defend Europe's crucial auto industry and pivot towards green growth while also averting a showdown with Beijing.

The EU has launched a raft of probes targeting Chinese subsidies for solar panels, wind turbines and trains, while Beijing has begun its own investigations into imported European brandy and pork.

The United States has already hiked customs duties on Chinese electric cars to 100 percent, while Canada is considering similar action.

China's emergence as an EV powerhouse stems in part from a targeted industrial strategy, with Beijing pouring vast state funds in recent years into domestic firms as well as research and development.

The approach has given Chinese firms a critical edge in the race to provide cheaper, more efficient EVs over leading European automakers, which have not always enjoyed such state largesse.

According to the Atlantic Council, Chinese sales of EVs abroad rose 70 percent in 2023, reaching $34.1 billion.

Almost 40 percent went to the European Union, the largest recipient of Chinese EVs.

OpenAI says it is concerned that a realistic voice feature for its artificial intelligence might cause people to bond with the bot at the cost of human interactions.

The San Francisco-based company cited literature which it said indicates that chatting with AI as one might with a person can result in misplaced trust and that the high quality of the GPT-4o voice may exacerbate that effect.

"Anthropomorphization involves attributing human-like behaviors and characteristics to nonhuman entities, such as AI models," OpenAI said Thursday in a report on safety work it is doing on a ChatGPT-4o version of its AI.

"This risk may be heightened by the audio capabilities of GPT-4o, which facilitate more human-like interactions with the model."

OpenAI said it noticed testers speaking to the AI in ways that hinted at shared bonds, such as lamenting aloud that it was their last day together.

It said these instances appear benign but must be studied to see how they might evolve over longer periods of time.

Socializing with AI could also make users less adept or inclined when it comes to relationships with humans, OpenAI speculated.

"Extended interaction with the model might influence social norms," the report said.

"For example, our models are deferential, allowing users to interrupt and 'take the mic' at any time, which, while expected for an AI, would be anti-normative in human interactions."

The ability for AI to remember details while conversing and to tend to tasks could also make people over-reliant on the technology, according to OpenAI.

"The recent concerns shared by OpenAI around potential dependence on ChatGPT's voice mode indicate what many have already begun asking: Is it time to pause and consider how this technology affects human interaction and relationships?" said Alon Yamin, co-founder and CEO of AI anti-plagiarism detection platform Copyleaks.

He said AI should never be a replacement for actual human interaction.

OpenAI said it will further test how voice capabilities in its AI might cause people to become emotionally attached.

Teams testing ChatGPT-4o voice capabilities were also able to prompt it to repeat false information and produce conspiracy theories, raising concerns the AI model could be told to do so convincingly.

OpenAI was forced to apologize to actress Scarlett Johansson in June for using something very similar to her voice in its latest chatbot, throwing a spotlight on voice-cloning tech.

Although OpenAI denied the voice they used was Johansson's, their case was not helped by CEO Sam Altman flagging the new model with a one-word message on social media—"Her".

Johansson voiced an AI character in the film "Her", which Altman has previously said is his favorite film about the technology.

The 2013 film stars Joaquin Phoenix as a man who falls in love with an AI assistant named Samantha.

It looks a bit like a small lawnmower, but instead of dual handles, a single black pole with a tablet-sized screen attached rises from the machine.

This robot isn't wildly talkative like the gold-clad C-3PO from "Star Wars," but it does have the ability to speak. This simple prototype called CrossBot doesn't sing or play guitar like Robot from "Lost in Space," but its human creator says it does possess powerful tools—the ability to protect kids in crosswalks—and the potential to reduce a Bay Area crossing guard shortage.

"It has a 360-degree view of the environment," said creator Hovannes Kulhandjian, an associate professor in electrical and computer engineering at Fresno State. "This is a very serious device; you have to have a very low probability of error because you are dealing with kids."

Kulhandjian, who also works with the Mineta Transportation Institute in San Jose, is working on a patent for his CrossBot.

It's equipped with sensors, including Lidar, a microphone, radar, video camera capabilities, a speaker system and advanced algorithms. In a video demonstration, CrossBot squats at the curb, then rolls out into the crosswalk when traffic is clear.

The robot rolls onto the crosswalk with its screen light red. When an approaching vehicle stops, the screen turns green, signaling to kids waiting at the curb that it's safe to cross. The robot can also tell a visually impaired person that it's safe to cross.

Kulhandjian said he came up with the idea for a robotic crossing guard while taking his two young daughters to school in Fresno and seeing teachers filling in as crossing guards when they had work to do preparing for class.

Kulhandjian said he trusts his robot to assist all children, including his own, and that the device has been tested on city streets with a more than 90% accuracy rate for detecting vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

But not every parent is sold on the idea.

"I would be livid if a robot replaced our crossing guards," said parent Kelly Lathrop of Lafayette in an email. "Crossing guards know our kids and keep an eye out in general, they are a highlight of the morning and afternoon. I wouldn't trust a robot to not malfunction or not get hacked. We need real eyes on these major and minor intersections."

Angela Roberts, the mother of two young daughters who attend Laurelwood Elementary School in Santa Clara, said she too would be concerned about the reliability of the robot, but she's also seen a lot of turnover with school crossing guards over the last three years.

Over the last few years, school districts in San Jose, Oakland, Los Altos, San Francisco and Pleasant Hill have all reported a shortage of crossing guards. Many crossing guards were displaced because of distance learning during the pandemic, and some never returned to their jobs, reports show.

"On average, it seems like there is a differently staffed crossing guard every couple months if not weeks. And it's not uncommon for there to be days where there is no crossing guard at all," Roberts said. "From my perspective, the challenge of hiring and retaining crossing guards has been ongoing due to its hours and pay. And while the students and families have always been gracious and appreciative of the crossing guards who have been there, the demand for robotic crossing guards may be a good solution."

While accidents, including pedestrian-related car crashes, are the second-leading cause of death for children under 14, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people on foot of all ages face danger on the street.

The Governors Highway Safety Association, which tracks pedestrian deaths in the United States, found that more than 7,500 pedestrians were killed by drivers in 2022, the latest year that data was available. That was the highest number since 1981, the report said.

These days, robots are used in a variety of ways for many different reasons. They transport goods in storage facilities, load and unload trucks, carry parts to production lines and even deliver packages and make coffee. Robots have been deployed to inspect railways and in airports to handle luggage, help clean facilities and assist with security inspections.

In fact, according to the Robotics Industry Size & Share Analysis Report by Mordor Intelligence, the global robotics market size is projected to reach $95.93 billion by 2029.

Kulhandjian said his robot isn't meant to take away jobs from humans, but a years-long crossing guard shortage in the Bay Area shows that may not be an issue. While Kulhandjian said he may add additional components to the robot, such as a large red stop sign, he said he believes the device could last a decade and cost a school district about $15,000 to $17,000 to buy.

"CrossBot is designed to complement and enhance human efforts rather than replace them," Kulhandjian said.

"In many areas, there may not be enough human crossing guards available, especially in regions lacking traffic lights or during times when staffing is limited. CrossBot can fill these gaps, providing additional safety measures during critical times and in high-demand areas."

Dell va licencier de nombreux salariés dans le cadre d’une réorganisation de ses divisions de vente et de marketing, révèle Bloomberg. Cette restructuration comprend également l’ouverture d’une nouvelle business unit entièrement consacrée aux services d’intelligence artificielle. La firme texane a refusé de communiquer sur le nombre d’emplois touchés. Selon SiliconAngle citant une source proche du dossier, le plan de licenciement pourrait toutefois concerner 12 500 salariés, soit 10% de l’effectif mondial du groupe. Dans une note interne adressée aux salariés, deux directeurs commerciaux ont indiqué que la société était “en train de s’alléger”, ajoutant qu’elle modifiait ses “priorités d’investissement”.

Le constructeur américain a suscité ces derniers temps l’intérêt des investisseurs en développant des serveurs puissants capables d’exécuter des charges de travail pour l’IA. Certains de ces serveurs devraient embarquer la dernière architecture GPU Blackwell de Nvidia. Dell a par ailleurs été retenue – avec Supermicro – pour fournir des baies de serveurs au supercalculateur construit par xAI, start-up créée par Elon Musk. Une demande croissante en serveurs d’IA qui semble toutefois avoir eu un impact négatif sur la rentabilité de l’entreprise, Dell prévoyant une baisse de sa marge brute d’environ 150 points au cours de l’exercice 2025. L’action de la firme s’établissait ce 8 août à un peu moins de 88 dollars, soit deux fois moins qu’en mai.

La société, qui comptait 120 000 salariés à travers le monde en février, a déjà procédé à deux vagues de licenciements l’année dernière. Elle avait licencié 6650 personnes en février 2023, justifiant sa décision par un net ralentissement de la demande, suivi d’un second plan de licenciement de 6300 salariés en août. Ces suppressions de postes interviennent une semaine après l’annonce par Intel de se séparer de 15 000 salariés, dans le cadre d’un plan de réduction des coûts de 10 milliards de dollars. Le spécialiste allemand des semi-conducteurs Infineon a également annoncé, lundi, qu’il allait licencier 1400 personnes.

L'intelligence artificielle générative est-elle indissociable du non-respect de la propriété intellectuelle ? On pourrait le croire tant les cas d'abus sont courants. Le dernier en date concerne Nvidia, qui a entraîné certains modèles propriétaires sur des vidéos récupérées massivement de YouTube et Netflix, ainsi que du site de bandes annonces MovieNet et de diverses bases de données comme WebVid, InternVid-10M et HD-VG-130M.

D'après 404 Media, ces énormes quantités de données (700 000 heures de vidéo par jour) auraient été aspirées pour améliorer le "générateur de monde" d'Omniverse 3D, la plateforme Drive Sim et les modèles de création "humains numériques" de Nvidia. Le nom de code du projet serait Cosmos, et les modèles en résultant n'auraient pas encore été rendus publics. Le projet aurait été validé "au plus haut niveau", l'idée étant de mettre les autres parties devant le fait accompli et de s'arranger avec eux plus tard.

Cette stratégie est commune à la plupart des acteurs de l'IA générative et s'avère courante dans le milieu tech américain de manière générale. On se rappelle du vieux slogan de Meta : "move fast and break things". OpenAI a fait la même chose pour son modèle Sora, de même que les start-up Runway AI, Stability AI et bien d'autres. Leur défense revient dans la plupart des cas à dire que le modèle ne fait qu'apprendre à partir de ces contenus, de la même manière qu'un humain apprend en lisant, visionnant, etc.

Une argumentation cynique et de mauvaise foi qui s'appuie sur le pseudo-mysticisme entourant cette technologie (souvent entretenu par les entreprises elles-mêmes) alors que leur fonctionnement n'est pas si complexe et revient en résumé à extraire et compresser les éléments clés des données d'entraînement sous forme de statistiques, puis à les restituer en mélangeant divers éléments en fonction des requêtes utilisateurs. C'est pour cela qu'ils comportent autant de paramètres et requièrent toujours plus de puissance de calcul.

Après trois ans de négociations formelles, et une dernière session de deux semaines à New York, la « Convention des Nations unies contre la cybercriminalité » a été approuvée par consensus et sera soumise ultérieurement à l’Assemblée générale pour adoption formelle.

« Je considère que les documents (...) sont adoptés. Merci beaucoup, bravo à tous ! », a lancé sous les applaudissements Faouzia Boumaiza Mebarki, présidente du comité intergouvernemental créé en 2019 pour rédiger ce traité, sur une proposition de la Russie.

« Coopération internationale ». Le nouveau traité, qui pourra entrer en vigueur après avoir été ratifié par 40 Etats, vise à « combattre plus efficacement la cybercriminalité » et à renforcer la coopération internationale en la matière, citant notamment les images pédopornographiques ou le blanchiment d’argent.

« Nous avons démontré l’importance de la volonté politique et notre détermination collective pour empêcher et combattre la cybercriminalité grâce à la coopération internationale », s’est félicitée la déléguée sud-africaine, saluant au nom du groupe Afrique une « Convention historique ». « L’assistance technique et le renforcement des capacités offriront le soutien nécessaire aux pays qui disposent d’infrastructures cyber moins développées », a-t-elle ajouté.

Mais les opposants au traité, alliance inhabituelle entre défenseurs des droits humains et grandes entreprises de la tech, dénoncent un périmètre bien trop large. Le texte prévoit notamment qu’un Etat peut, pour enquêter sur tout crime passible d’au moins quatre ans de prison dans sa loi nationale, demander aux autorités d’un autre Etat toute preuve électronique liée à ce crime et également réclamer des données à un fournisseur d’accès.

« Outil de surveillance ». Ce sera « une catastrophe pour les droits humains et c’est un moment sombre pour l’ONU », a déclaré à l’AFP Deborah Brown, de Human Rights Watch, décrivant un « outil multilatéral de surveillance sans précédent ». « Il peut être utilisé pour réprimer les journalistes, les militants, les personnes LGBT, les libres penseurs et d’autres, par-delà des frontières », a-t-elle déploré.

Dans ce contexte, le Haut-commissariat de l’ONU aux droits de l’Homme avait émis de sérieuses réserves sur le texte, appelant cette semaine les Etats à « s’assurer que les droits humains soient au cœur de la Convention ». « Les défenseurs des droits, les chercheurs et les enfants ne devraient pas craindre une criminalisation d’activités protégées », avait-il ajouté sur X.

Si la lutte contre la pédopornographie et l’exploitation sexuelle des enfants fait consensus, certains s’inquiètent d’une criminalisation possible de selfies intimes ou d’images prises par un mineur lors d’une relation sexuelle consentie.

« Défauts majeurs ». « Malheureusement, [le comité] a adopté une convention sans répondre à nombre des défauts majeurs identifiés par la société civile, le secteur privé et même l’organe de l’ONU pour les droits de l’Homme », a dénoncé auprès de l’AFP Nick Ashton-Hart, qui menait à ces négociations la délégation de l’organisation Cybersecurity Tech Accord, rassemblant plus de 100 entreprises du secteur comme Microsoft ou Meta.

« Nous ne pensons pas que les Etats devraient signer ou appliquer cette convention », a-t-il plaidé. Certaines délégations estiment à l’inverse que le traité fait trop de place aux droits humains. La Russie, soutien historique de ce processus, a ainsi déploré il y a quelques jours un traité « plus que saturé par des garde-fous liés aux droits humains », accusant certains pays de « poursuivre des objectifs étroits et égoïstes sous couvert de valeurs démocratiques ».

Lors de la session d’approbation du texte jeudi, l’Iran a de son côté tenté de faire supprimer plusieurs clauses aux « défauts importants ». L’un des paragraphes visés souligne notamment que « rien dans cette Convention ne doit être interprété comme permettant la répression des droits humains ou des libertés fondamentales » : liberté d’expression, de conscience, d’opinion, de religion, d’association...

Cette requête de suppression a été rejetée par 102 voix contre, 23 pour (dont Russie, Inde, Soudan, Venezuela, Syrie, Corée du Nord, Libye) et 26 abstentions. Ni l’Iran ni aucun autre pays n’a toutefois choisi d’empêcher l’approbation par consensus.

Le chercheur Michael Bargury s'est étendu sur la manière dont Copilot, l'intelligence artificielle de Microsoft, peut être détournée pour créer des attaques malveillantes en se faisant passer pour des utilisateurs que vous connaîtriez.

**Copilot, Partout, Tout Le Temps**

Si l'utilité de Copilot ne fait pas sens pour tout le monde, Microsoft continue de pousser son intelligence artificielle au sein de ses applications avec sa suite Office 365 pouvant vous aider entre autres à rédiger des textes. Une omniprésence qui n'a pas échappé à certains chercheurs.

Wired, a pu assister à une conférence sur la sécurité Black Hat à Las Vegas et a rencontré le chercheur Michael Bargury qui explique comment des hackeurs pourraient s'emparer de cet outil pour créer un outil de phishing ultra-performant.

**Votre IA Est Un Double Numérique**

Copilot, en étant détournée, peut extraire des informations privées et contourner les protections de sécurité de Microsoft. Bargury, cofondateur et directeur technique de la société de sécurité Zenity, a créé un code capable d'utiliser Copilot pour voir les destinataires de vos e-mails, rédiger un message qui imiterait votre style d'écriture en y insérant des emoji si vous en utilisez tout en créant un message personnalisé. Message personnalisé qui comporterait un lien malveillant bien entendu.

« Je peux le faire avec toutes les personnes à qui vous avez parlé et je peux envoyer des centaines d'e-mails en votre nom », déclare Bargury. La force de l'intelligence artificielle réside ici dans une personnalisation poussée des messages pouvant être envoyé à l'intégralité de votre répertoire en l'espace de quelques minutes.

La démonstration ne s'arrête pas là. Le chercheur indique pouvoir piéger Copilot pour fournir des informations bancaires de certains utilisateurs ou encore d'extraire des données sensibles à partir de prompt sans déclencher les sécurités de Microsoft. Une situation à laquelle Phillip Misner, responsable de la détection et de la réponse aux incidents d'IA chez Microsoft, a répondu, indiquant que les risques de cette technique sont similaires à d'autres techniques après piratage. L'accent devant être mis sur la surveillance et la sécurité au sein des environnements. Les chercheurs pointent du doigt, le fait que les entreprises ont notamment longtemps négligé les process de sécurité laissant vagabonder des informations sensibles non cryptées parmi leurs salariés.

Une question prise à bras-le-corps par certaines entreprises comme Super SafeIntelligence. Reste à voir comment ces process vont se généraliser dans le futur et quelle prévention se fera pour prémunir les utilisateurs de ces risques.

CNOOC Limited, acteur majeur de l'exploration énergétique, annonce une avancée significative avec la validation de plus de 100 milliards de mètres cubes de gaz confirmé sur le site Lingshui 36-1. Ce gisement, situé dans le bassin de Qiongdongnan, est le premier champ de gaz ultra-peu profond en eaux ultra-profondes au monde, marquant une étape essentielle dans l'exploration sous-marine.

Dâ€™aprÃ¨s un article du South China Morning Post, il sâ€™agit dâ€™un projet de lâ€™entreprise Shanghai Yuanxin Satellite Technology Company, qui est contrÃ´lÃ© par PÃ©kin. Et Ã lâ€™instar de Starlink, ce projet vise Ã dÃ©ployer des satellites en orbite terrestre basse, afin de fournir une bonne connexion Ã internet nâ€™importe oÃ¹.

Ce projet avance, puisque lâ€™Empire du Milieu a rÃ©cemment lancÃ© les 18 satellites qui vont former cette future constellation. Alors que Starlink propose dÃ©jÃ sa connexion par satellites depuis des annÃ©es, la sociÃ©tÃ© dâ€™Elon Musk prÃ©pare un nouveau service qui permettra aux utilisateurs de smartphones de se connecter sur les zones blanches, sans Ã©quipement spÃ©cial. Pour Steve Brierley, fondateur de la société Riverlane, basée dans la célèbre ville universitaire du centre de l’Angleterre, la technologie connaîtra dans les années qui viennent son moment « Spoutnik », du nom du satellite soviétique dont le lancement en 1957 avait constitué une étape majeure de la conquête spatiale. « L’informatique quantique ne constituera pas seulement une légère amélioration par rapport aux précédents ordinateurs, ce sera un énorme pas en avant », assure-t-il à l’AFP.

Promesses. Son entreprise produit le premier microprocesseur dédié à cette technologie aux puissances de calcul gigantesques, qui détecte et corrige les erreurs freinant actuellement son développement. Fabriquer des appareils « à la hauteur des promesses incroyables de cette technologie nécessite un changement massif d'échelle et de fiabilité, ce qui nécessite des systèmes fiables de correction des erreurs », explique John Martinis, ancien responsable du développement de cette technologie au sein du laboratoire Google Quantum AI.

Signe de l’intérêt pour les activités de Riverlane et en général pour cette technologie comparée à l’intelligence artificielle (IA) pour ses bouleversements potentiels, la société a annoncé mardi avoir levé 75 millions de dollars (près de 69 millions d’euros) auprès d’investisseurs. « D’ici deux à trois ans, nous pourrons atteindre des systèmes capables de supporter un million d’opérations sans erreur », contre un millier seulement actuellement, avance Earl Campbell, vice-président de Riverlane. Ce seuil, précise-t-il, est considéré comme crucial pour rendre les ordinateurs quantiques plus performants que leurs équivalents actuels.

Capacité exponentielle. Avec ses capacités de stimulation des interactions entre particules, atomes et molécules, la technologie est considérée comme susceptible de permettre le développement de médicaments révolutionnaires ou d’améliorer radicalement la production d’engrais, une industrie très émettrice de CO2. Elle pourrait ouvrir la voie à des batteries bien plus efficaces, au rôle clé dans la lutte contre le réchauffement climatique. La quantité d’informations que les ordinateurs quantiques peuvent exploiter augmente de manière exponentielle avec leur taille, contrairement aux appareils actuels.

L’informatique classique repose en effet sur des données stockées sous la forme de bits, qui n’ont que deux états possibles (0 ou 1). Les ordinateurs quantiques, eux, utilisent des « qubits », briques de base qui ont une infinité d'états possibles pouvant se superposer et s’enchevêtrer. Mais ce fonctionnement qui utilise les extraordinaires propriétés de la matière à l'échelon atomique ou sub-atomique a un désavantage : leur comportement étrange rend nécessaire l’utilisation d’algorithmes complexes pour les traiter. Les qubits sont aussi très sensibles aux erreurs dues au bruit, et résoudre ce problème sera « crucial », souligne Steve Brierley, entouré d’oscilloscopes et circuits intégrés dans le laboratoire de son entreprise.

Tâches complexes. Les géants de l’informatique comme Google, IBM et Microsoft investissent des sommes énormes pour cette technologie et en particulier pour tenter de réduire les erreurs induites, soit en protégeant les appareils ou en utilisant des algorithmes pour détecter et corriger ces erreurs. Vu cette complexité, l’intérêt de la technologie s’exprime surtout avec des ordinateurs de grande taille. Quand on augmente leur échelle, les possibilités offertes augmentent plus vite que les défauts à régler. Autrement dit, ces engins fonctionnent mieux pour des tâches complexes. « On ne se servira certainement pas des ordinateurs quantiques pour envoyer des courriels », sourit Steve Brierley. En revanche, « on pourra résoudre des problèmes qui seraient autrement insolubles », ajoute-t-il.

L’entrepreneur juge « très enthousiasmants » les résultats obtenus. « Le défi maintenant est de pouvoir passer à plus grande échelle ». Les progrès actuels, en plus du potentiel d’une technologie susceptible de surmonter tous les systèmes de cryptage existants et créer de nouveaux matériaux, attirent déjà l’attention des régulateurs. Steve Brierley juge « très important de tirer les leçons de l’IA pour ne pas se retrouver surpris par cette technologie et réfléchir très tôt à ses implications ». « Je pense que l’informatique quantique finira par être régulée car c’est une technologie très importante », relève-t-il. « Et je pense qu’il s’agit d’une technologie pour laquelle aucun gouvernement ne veut passer en second ».

When a person creates a fingerprint template by pressing their finger against a biometric scanner, the scanner is generally not capable of telling whether each scan is of the same finger of the same person. In unattended biometric enrollment situations, this creates a risk of fraud, with one of the people whose biometrics were combined with anotherâ€™s posing as them for authentication, according to a new patent application from Mastercard.

The patent filing for â€œSystems and Methods for Preventing Biometric Infringementâ€ has been published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

â€œCurrent biometric sensors and registration processes cannot determine whether a single user is performing a biometric registration process, or more than one user is performing the registration process,â€ the inventors write. â€œConsequently, two or more users can register their respective biometric feature (e.g., a fingerprint) on a single device during a single registration process. As such, any user that participated in the registration process may be subsequently authenticated by the single stored biometric template or profile. This enables any one of the registered users to perform a fraudulent activity by purporting to be any one of the other registered users.â€

To address this problem, Mastercard researchers propose extracting two or more elements of the biometric feature from the initial scan, and then validating the template against the next scan. Extracted biometric features (like minutia in the case of fingerprints) are â€œcharacterized by type, location, and orientation relative to the coordinate system of the biometric sensor.â€

The method can be applied to any biometric modality, according to the application.

Mastercard has been investing in several different modalities for retail payment, including pilot of its Biometric Checkout Program with iris and face biometrics from PayEye, and palm biometrics in partnership with Ingenico, Fulcrum Biometrics, Fujitsu Frontech and Scanntech. The company remains active in payment cards, however, with a drumbeat of approvals for its fingerprint-enabled Mastercard.

As new deepfake tools become increasingly accessible, there is a growing risk of undermining trust and security. Even cyber hackers with minimal skills can use these tools to carry out scams.

With the proliferation of AI-generated audio and video content on social media, companies are now seeking to incorporate deepfake detection models into their security infrastructure. This is especially important as synthetic content can even bypass biometric facial verification.

Reality Defender has engaged in collaborative efforts with Respeecher and ElevenLabs with the aim of enhancing its detection platform. Trend Micro has implemented upgrades to its Trend Vision One platform in order to address the GenAI deepfake content. Finally, Hiya has acquired Loccus.ai with the intention of bolstering its voice security platform.

**Reality Defender Partners To Combat Audio Deepfakes**

Reality Defender has partnered with Respeecher to enhance audio deepfake detection models. Through this collaboration, Reality Defender's clients will have access to Respeecher's advanced generative AI capabilities integrated with Reality Defender's detection platform.

The jointly developed system will address the challenge of AI-generated content by identifying and thwarting audio threats. According to the company, Respeecher's audio processing models produce synthetic speech that will enhance the effectiveness of the detection platform.

â€œOur proprietary audio processing models will significantly enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of Reality Defender's detection platform, providing an unparalleled level of protection against AI-generated threats,â€ says Alex Serdiuk, chief executive officer and co-founder of Respeecher.

To further strengthen the audio deepfake detection models, Reality Defender partnered with ElevenLabs. In addition to safeguarding against audio deepfakes, the two companies are collaboratively working to reinforce the security of AI tools.

ElevenLabs is contributing its proprietary models and methodologies, which, when combined with Reality Defender's multi-model detection approach, enhance the dependability of our detection models, the company reports.

â€œCollaborating with fellow technology companies, academia, and policymakers to develop reliable methods for AI content detection is a key pillar of our safety efforts,â€ says Aleksandra Pedraszewska, head of AI Safety at ElevenLabs.

Earlier this year, Reality Defender expanded its capabilities by adding support for Spanish and Portuguese audio files as part of its effort to develop a multilingual deepfake detection model. Additionally, the company enhanced its video deepfake detection models with the introduction of a new transformer-based video model called “Guided,” which emphasizes facial representations based on real samples.

**Trend Micro Upgrades Trend Vision One To Prevent Deepfake Scams**

Trend Micro has introduced improvements to its Trend Vision One platform to safeguard individual consumers from AI-powered impersonations and scams. The Deepfake Inspector is currently accessible to consumers and will soon be integrated into the Trend Vision One platform.

According to the company, the deepfake detection system goes beyond traditional image noise analysis and color detection by incorporating user behavioral analysis. Once a deepfake is detected, the platform notifies enterprise security teams to proactively counter future attacks.

â€œWith our newly announced cutting-edge capabilities within the Trend Vision One platform, we are at the forefront of combating these threats for our enterprise customers, to detect deepfakes and other forms of AI fraud,â€ says Mick McCluney, ANZ Field chief technology officer, Trend Micro ANZ.

The latest features in the Trend Vision One platform enable centralized management of employees' GenAI access and usage. The platform also provides tools to inspect prompts in order to prevent data leaks and malicious injections.

These updates offer real-time verification in live video conversations, alerting users to potential deception. A Trend Micro survey revealed that approximately 36 percent of consumers experienced scam attempts involving deepfakes.

**Hiya Acquires Loccus.ai For AI Voice Detection System**

Hiya, a provider of voice security services, has acquired Loccus.ai, a company specializing in deepfake voice detection systems. This move is aimed at enhancing the Hiya voice security platform through the incorporation of AI-generated voice detection capabilities.

Following the acquisition, the product offering will be rebranded as Hiya AI voice detection, which will complement the existing Hiya adaptive AI fraud prevention system. The company states that the AI voice detection software is capable of identifying AI-generated voices with 1.5 seconds of audio.

Moreover, for broader deployment, the deepfake detection system can be integrated into personal communications apps, news and social media content, video conferencing, and contact center platforms, the company says.

â€œJoining Hiya allows us to help more customers leverage Loccus.ai voice detection with the industry-leading voice security offering, as we scale to 500+ million global users across the Hiya network,â€ says Manel Terraz, chief executive officer and founder of Loccus.ai.

Hackers delivered malware to Windows and Mac users by compromising their Internet service provider and then tampering with software updates delivered over unsecure connections, researchers said.

The attack, researchers from security firm Volexity said, worked by hacking routers or similar types of device infrastructure of an unnamed ISP. The attackers then used their control of the devices to poison domain name system responses for legitimate hostnames providing updates for at least six different apps written for Windows or macOS. The apps affected were the 5KPlayer, Quick Heal, Rainmeter, Partition Wizard, and those from Corel and Sogou.

**These Aren’t The Update Servers You’re Looking For**

Because the update mechanisms didn’t use TLS or cryptographic signatures to authenticate the connections or downloaded software, the threat actors were able to use their control of the ISP infrastructure to successfully perform machine-in-the-middle (MitM) attacks that directed targeted users to hostile servers rather than the ones operated by the affected software makers. These redirections worked even when users employed non-encrypted public DNS services such as Google’s 8.8.8.8 or Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 rather than the authoritative DNS server provided by the ISP.

“That is the fun/scary part—this was not the hack of the ISPs DNS servers,” Volexity CEO Steven Adair wrote in an online interview. “This was a compromise of network infrastructure for Internet traffic. The DNS queries, for example, would go to Google’s DNS servers destined for 8.8.8.8. The traffic was being intercepted to respond to the DNS queries with the IP address of the attacker’s servers.”

In other words, the DNS responses returned by any DNS server would be changed once it reached the infrastructure of the hacked ISP. The only way an end user could have thwarted the attack was to use DNS over HTTPS or DNS over TLS to ensure lookup results haven’t been tampered with or to avoid all use of apps that deliver unsigned updates over unencrypted connections.

Volexity provided the following diagram illustrating the flow of the attack:

As an example, the 5KPlayer app uses an unsecure HTTP connection rather than an encrypted HTTPS one to check if an update is available and, if so, to download a configuration file named Youtube.config. StormBamboo, the name used in the industry to track the hacking group responsible, used DNS poisoning to deliver a malicious version of the Youtube.config file from a malicious server. This file, in turn, downloaded a next-stage payload that was disguised as a PNG image. In fact, it was an executable file that installed malware tracked under the names MACMA for macOS devices or POCOSTICK for Windows devices.

MACMA first came to light in a 2021 post published by Google’s Threat Analysis Group, a team that tracks malware and cyberattacks backed by nation-states. The backdoor was written for macOS and iOS devices and provided a full suite of capabilities including device fingerprinting, screen capture, file downloading and uploading, execution of terminal commands, audio recording, and keylogging.

POCOSTICK, meanwhile, has been in use since at least 2014. Last year, security firm ESET said the malware, which it tracked under the name MGBot, was used exclusively by a Chinese-speaking threat group tracked as Evasive Panda.

ESET researchers determined that the malware was installed through legitimate updates of benign software, but they weren’t sure how that happened. One possibility, the researchers said at the time, was through a supply-chain attack that replaced the legitimate updates with malicious ones at the very source. The other possible scenario was through a MitM attack on the servers delivering the updates. Volexity’s findings now confirm that the latter explanation is the correct one.

In at least one case in the most recent attacks, StormBamboo forced a macOS device to install a browser plugin Volexity tracks under the name RELOADEXT. The extension masquerades as one that loads webpages to be compatible with Internet Explorer. In fact, Volexity said, it copies browser cookies and sends them to a Google Drive account controlled by the attackers. The data was base64 encoded and encrypted using the Advanced Encryption Standard. Despite the care taken by the hackers, they nonetheless exposed the client_id, client_secret, and refresh_token in the malicious extension.

One other technique Volexity observed was StormBamboo’s use of DNS poisoning to hijack www.msftconnecttest.com, a domain Microsoft uses to determine if Windows devices are actively connected to the Internet. By replacing the legitimate DNS resolution with an IP address pointing to a malicious site operated by the threat actors, they could intercept HTTP requests destined for any host.

Adair declined to identify the hacked ISP other than to say it’s “not a big huge one or one you’d likely know.”

“In our case the incident is contained, but we see other servers that are actively serving malicious updates but we do not know where they are being served from,” he said. “We suspect there are other active attacks around the world we do not have purview into. This could be from an ISP compromise or a localized compromise to an organization such as on their firewall.”

As noted earlier, there are many options for preventing these sorts of attacks beyond (1) eschewing all software that updates unsecurely or (2) using DNS over HTTPS or DNS over TLS. The first method is likely the best, although it likely means having to stop using a preferred app in at least some cases. The alternative DNS configurations are viable, but at the moment are offered by only a handful of DNS providers, with 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 being the best known.

L'entreprise de Jensen Huang, pierre angulaire de l'industrie de l'intelligence artificielle, a informé ses principaux clients d'un délai d'au moins trois mois suite à des défauts de conception, d'après le média spécialisé The Information.

Annoncées à l'origine pour cette année, les puces Blackwell ne sont désormais attendues qu'en 2025. Nvidia et son partenaire TSMC se livreraient actuellement à des tests sur les chaînes de production pour essayer de résoudre le problème au plus tôt. Ce report touche directement les hyperscalers, qui se livrent une lutte sans merci pour s'imposer sur le marché de l'IA générative.

**Des Dizaines De Milliards De Dollars Dans La Balance**

The Information rapporte par exemple que Google a commandé plus de 400 000 puces GB200, pour un coût total (incluant d'autres équipements) dépassant les 10 milliards de dollars. Même chose pour Microsoft et Meta. Preuve du caractère stratégie de sa relation avec Nvidia, Mark Zuckerberg était sur scène avec Jensen Huang au Siggraph la semaine dernière.

Ce cafouillage pourrait représenter une chance pour AMD et son Instinct MI350 nouvellement annoncé, dont la sortie est prévue pour 2025, ainsi que pour Intel et son accélérateur Gaudi 3 dédié à l'inférence (déjà censé être sur le marché). Néanmoins cela ne suffira pas à renverser la mainmise de Nvidia sur l'écosystème, acquise grâce à son positionnement prescient sur le marché, près de dix ans avant ses concurrents.

OpenAI a mis au point une technique de "tatouage numérique" (watermarking) pour le texte généré par ses modèles GPT. Très fiable, celle-ci serait prête depuis un an mais l'entreprise a préféré ne pas la mettre à disposition car elle peut être facilement contournée. Son existence a été révélée le 4 août par le Wall Street Journal, puis rapidement confirmée par OpenAI. L'entreprise spécifie que son approche en la matière est prudente et réfléchie car la situation est "complexe" et "son impact sur l'écosystème dépasserait OpenAI".

Ce principe de "marquage" des textes générés consiste à y glisser des informations subtiles créant une sorte de signature invisible, détectable par un outil sachant quoi chercher mais pas par le commun des mortels. Une approche différente de celle des premiers "détecteurs" publiés l'année dernière, qui n'étaient pas suffisamment fiables.

OpenAI n'est pas la première entreprise à concevoir un outil de la sorte, Google et Meta en ont déjà fait de même par le passé pour les images et la génération audio. L'enjeu n'est cependant pas le même, ChatGPT étant de loin l'outil d'IA générative le plus utilisé au monde à l'heure actuelle.

**Trop Facilement Contournable ?**

OpenAI explique que son système est "très précis et efficace contre les modifications localisées d'un texte comme la paraphrase", mais qu'il est "moins solide contre une modification globale, comme d'utilisation des systèmes de traduction automatique, de faire reformuler le texte par un autre modèle de langage, ou de demander au modèle d'insérer un caractère spécial entre chaque mot, puis de l'effacer." En conséquence, l'entreprise juge qu'il serait relativement aisé de contourner le système.

Elle cite aussi, de façon peu convaincante, une inquiétude autour de la potentielle discrimination que cela pourrait engendrer auprès de personnes utilisant ChatGPT pour compenser leur faible niveau d'anglais. Gageons que cela pourrait surtout réduire une partie de l'usage qui est fait de son chatbot, par exemple dans le milieu scolaire et académique, ou dans celui de la recherche d'emploi. OpenAI dit néanmoins qu'elle continue de travailler sur la question en explorant d'autres approches.
